#OUROWNSTORY
Back in the summer of 2019, Maram Nazmy, our founder, was in the middle of a class when she stumbled across a picture of a deer head. And just like that, a challenge was born. A challenge that made Maram discover the true purpose of her creations.
IN THE FOUNDER'S OWN WORDS
I DIDN'T GROW UP HERE
I didn’t grow up here. On the contrary, I spent more time outside of Egypt than I did inside of it. But somehow, I grew up longing for here. And it was probably on a plane that I decided I wanted to be an architect - looking at Cairo through a very small window.Â

The Lightbulb Moment
And between endless classes, long nights and what seemed like an impossible degree, I found the time to craft this deer head I came across online. I was frustrated I wasn’t doing enough things with my hands and this seemed like a good opportunity.Â

From Skewer Sticks to Steel: Skilled Hands Needed
First, I made it with skewer sticks and a glue gun. Next, I was determined, motivated and inspired, ready to find someone to turn that deer into something more. I made my way through Cairo’s workshops, looking for someone to help make it from steel. Skewer sticks weren’t going to cut it.Â

A Lot of NOs
With a picture of the deer and glue gun burns on my fingertips, I began looking for "werash" to turn this deer into something real. I was greeted with a lot of no-s, a lot of that’s not what we do here and a lot of that’s not what anybody does anywhere.Â

Embracing the "NOs": Exploring the Alleys of Cairo
The no-s were definitely loud but I was determined to be louder. Betting on myself, and the little nerd I am at heart, I knew a no couldn’t stop me. And this is where my journey began, exploring the alleys of downtown Cairo, hoping to find something else besides a no.Â

From an Idea to Reality
After another round of sketches, skewer sticks and glue gun burns, I make my way back to the werash, except this time, I know to ask the right questions. And I get the right answer. I also make the best of friends and partners: a group of artisans who know that steel can be bent into anything and that although a no might be attractive, it will not take you far.Â

A Passion Ignited: An Extension of Identity and Purpose
The deer comes to life. And the deer becomes Maramzy. And Maramzy becomes an extension of me. My small project grew into my passion and became what has driven me, what has centered me and what made me, well, me.Â

Dust, Tea, and Artistry: Crafting Stories Beyond the Deer
I forget about the deer and together with the artisans we find ways to bring everything else to life, breathing meaning into steel, learning more about the craft and spending days on end covered in dust, drinking tea.Â
